The HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2989 uses thermal inkjet hardware for colour printing, flatbed scanning, and copying. Black ink comes from a pigment cartridge, and a second cartridge carries the three dye-based colours. Local controls sit beside an icon LCD, with seven buttons and five status lights showing the machine state. There is no touchscreen, fax hardware, automatic document feeder, internal storage, or automatic paper sensor. Originals must therefore be placed on the flatbed one at a time.
Black documents run at up to 7.5 ISO ppm, and colour pages reach 5.5 ISO ppm. Black output can reach 1200 x 1200 rendered dpi. On selected photo paper, colour quality rises to 4800 x 1200 optimized dpi. Scanning relies on a CIS flatbed with 1200 dpi optical resolution for A4 originals. Copy speed is rated at six black or three colour pages per minute, with no more than nine copies in one job.
The input tray takes 60 plain sheets. It can also hold 20 cards or photo sheets, but envelope capacity drops to five. Printed pages collect in a 25-sheet output tray, so longer jobs may need attention before the input tray empties. A4, B5, A6, and DL envelopes fit as standard sizes. Custom sheets can range from 76 x 127 to 215 x 355 mm, using plain, photo, brochure, or specialty inkjet paper. Two-sided pages require manual turning, and borderless output is not available.
A nearby computer can connect through Hi-Speed USB 2.0. Wireless jobs travel over either a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi network. Phones and tablets can send pages through the HP app, Apple AirPrint, Mopria Print Service, or HP Print Service Plugin. With the trays closed, the body measures 425 x 304 x 154 mm and weighs about 3.42 kg. Opening the printer for use increases its depth and height to 546.6 mm and 250 mm. HP recommends a monthly volume of 50 to 100 pages, which places it closer to light home use than sustained office printing.
