A piezo inkjet head handles printing with 420 black nozzles and 420 nozzles for each colour channel. The control panel carries a 2.7-inch, 6.8 cm TFT colour touch LCD. Ink comes from four separate pigment cartridges: black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. Standard LC516 cartridges fit the four colour positions. LC516XL cartridges raise the listed yield to about 6,000 black pages and about 5,000 pages for each colour. Print resolution reaches up to 1200 x 4800 dpi. On A4 plain paper, Brother lists about 28 ipm in monochrome and about 26 ipm in colour.

Paper feeds from two front trays, with a multipurpose tray for heavier or less common jobs. Tray 1 takes up to 250 sheets and accepts A4, Letter, photo paper, postcards, and several envelope types. Tray 2 adds another 250-sheet feed. The multipurpose tray takes 100 plain sheets. For long paper, it can feed one sheet measuring 210 x 900 mm.

Automatic duplex printing works only with plain or recycled paper. The duplex path accepts A4, Letter, Legal, Executive, B5, A5, B6, and postcard sizes. Borderless printing covers A4, Letter, A6, index card, L, 2L, postcard, Legal, and long paper. From a USB flash drive, the printer reads JPEG and PDF files for direct printing.

A computer can connect through USB. Network printing can use wired LAN, wireless LAN, or Wi-Fi Direct. Brother also lists NFC, AirPrint, and Mopria for compatible devices. With the trays closed, the printer measures 435 x 439 x 291 mm and weighs about 14.1 kg.
