HP DeskJet 2820 Driver links the computer with this compact colour inkjet all-in-one. Once installed, the software passes print jobs and scan requests to the correct part of the machine. Copying takes place from the control panel, but the computer still needs the driver for printing and scanning. A nearby computer can use USB, or jobs can travel across a wireless network. Without the correct software, the operating system may detect the printer without making every function usable.

Selected photo paper permits colour output at up to 4800 x 1200 optimized dpi. The flatbed scans at 1200 x 1200 dpi, and copies run at up to 6 cpm in black or 3 cpm in colour. Those speeds suit short home jobs better than large document batches.

The rear input tray takes 60 sheets, but the output tray holds only 25 printed pages. Standard paper sizes include A4, B5, and A6, together with DL envelopes. Custom sheets can range from 76 x 127 mm to 215 x 355 mm. Plain paper, photo sheets, brochure stock, cards, and inkjet media use the same feed path. Borderless output is unavailable. For two-sided documents, each sheet must be turned by hand.

A nearby computer can use the Hi-Speed USB 2.0 connection. Wireless jobs travel over a 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n network, and the printer also works with the HP app, Chrome OS, and Apple AirPrint. No Ethernet port or direct storage-printing slot is fitted. With the trays closed, the body measures 425 x 304 x 154 mm and weighs about 3.42 kg. Extending the output tray increases the depth to 546 mm and the height to 250 mm.
