HP Smart Tank 727 Driver connects the computer with the printer for printing and scanning. A USB setup links one nearby computer, while wireless communication lets jobs travel across the local network. The software also helps the operating system identify the machine and access its print and scan settings. Copying remains available from the printer itself and does not depend on a computer connection.

HP Smart Tank 727 is a colour all-in-one for printing, scanning, and copying. Its HP Thermal Inkjet printhead draws ink from four refillable tanks: one for black and three for colour. A 70 x 12 mm LCD sits beside the guided control buttons, with sensors tracking paper and ink levels. Originals must go on the flatbed one at a time because the machine has no automatic document feeder. Fax hardware is not fitted.

Standard A4 documents run at up to 15 ISO ppm in black or 9 ISO ppm in colour. Draft mode is quicker, reaching 23 ppm for black pages and 22 ppm for colour. The first page takes about 14 seconds in black and 16 seconds in colour, so short jobs do not begin instantly. Black resolution reaches 1200 x 1200 rendered dpi. Colour printing can use up to 4800 x 1200 optimized dpi, and automatic duplexing turns ordinary sheets without manual reloading. Borderless output is limited to supported sizes up to A4.

The flatbed takes originals up to 216 x 297 mm and scans at an optical resolution of 1200 dpi. It records colour at 24-bit depth. Copy resolution reaches 600 dpi for black text and 600 x 600 dpi in colour. Enlargement and reduction range from 25% to 400%, with as many as 99 copies available from one job. The input tray holds 250 sheets, but the output tray stops at 100 sheets. Printed pages may therefore need clearing during a large run.

The main tray accepts common office sizes such as A4, A5, A6, B5, and legal. Envelopes and cards also fit. Photo and brochure stocks can be loaded when their size and weight stay within the paper limits. Plain sheets range from 60 to 105 g/m², whereas photo paper can reach 250 g/m². A nearby computer can connect by USB. Wireless jobs can use dual-band Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct, and mobile printing is available through AirPrint and Mopria. With the trays closed, the body measures 42.75 x 36.40 x 19.86 cm and weighs about 6.38 kg.
