After installation, the operating system can send jobs to the machine instead of treating it as an unknown device. The HP OfficeJet 8010e is a colour thermal inkjet all-in-one for printing, scanning, and copying. Black, cyan, magenta, and yellow each use a separate cartridge. Document processing comes from a 1.2 GHz processor and 256 MB of memory. A 2.2-inch capacitive touchscreen sits on the control panel. Above the flatbed, the 35-sheet automatic document feeder takes care of multipage originals.

Professional mode reaches up to 18 ppm for black pages and 10 ppm for colour. General Office mode runs faster, at up to 28 ppm black and 24 ppm colour. Black resolution tops out at 1200 by 1200 rendered dpi. Colour output can reach 4800 by 1200 optimized dpi when suitable HP photo paper is used. Automatic duplex printing turns the sheet inside the machine, so ordinary two-sided jobs do not need manual reloading.

The main tray holds 225 sheets, but the output area has room for 60 printed pages. Standard document sizes include A4, A5, A6, and B5. Cards and photo sheets use the same paper feed, along with several envelope sizes. The tray takes up to ten envelopes at once. Borderless printing extends to supported photo paper in sizes up to A4 or Letter. Brochure, presentation, recycled, glossy, matte, and heavier plain paper can also be loaded.

A computer or mobile device can connect over dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi Direct permits a local wireless connection without relying on the home router. Mobile printing also works with Apple AirPrint, Mopria, and the HP app. This version has no Ethernet port for a wired network connection. With the body closed, it measures 460 by 337.5 by 233 mm and weighs 8.2 kg. The maximum monthly duty cycle is 20,000 pages, although HP recommends a regular volume of about 800 pages.
