The HP DeskJet 4200e Driver links the all-in-one printer with a computer for printing, scanning, and copying. A nearby computer can use the USB connection, while wireless setup places the printer on the network. Correct installation lets the operating system identify each function instead of treating the machine as an unknown device. It can also resolve communication faults that prevent jobs from reaching the printer or block access to the scanner.

The HP DeskJet 4200e combines colour thermal inkjet printing with scanning and copying. Printing comes from one black cartridge and one tri-colour cartridge. Originals can go on the flatbed or into the 35-sheet automatic document feeder, which is useful for multi-page jobs. Local controls consist of physical buttons and an icon LCD; there is no touchscreen or built-in fax hardware.
Black documents print at up to 8.5 ISO pages per minute, and colour pages reach 5.5 ISO pages per minute. The first black page can leave ready mode in about 15 seconds. On selected HP photo paper, colour output reaches an optimised resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi. The flatbed scans at up to 1200 dpi, and a copy job can produce as many as nine copies.
The rear tray takes 60 sheets of plain paper, but the output tray holds only 25 printed sheets. Photo and brochure paper can use the same feed. It also accepts envelopes, cards, and other suitable inkjet media, including A4, B5, A6, and DL envelope sizes. Custom sheets may extend to 355 mm in length. Two-sided pages need manual turning because automatic duplex printing is not fitted, and borderless printing is unavailable.
A nearby computer can connect through the Hi-Speed USB 2.0 device port. Wireless jobs use single-band 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi based on 802.11b/g/n, and Wi-Fi Direct can link a compatible device without the home router. Common mobile printing services are also supported. Ethernet, memory-card access, and wired network printing are not built into the hardware. With the trays closed, the body is about 428 mm wide, 332 mm deep, and 200 mm high; it weighs roughly 4.8 kg.
