HP Smart Tank 524 is a colour all-in-one inkjet for printing, scanning, and copying. Printing comes from an HP Thermal Inkjet head supplied by four refillable tanks. Black ink uses a pigment formula, whereas cyan, magenta, and yellow use dye-based ink. Originals sit on a flatbed above the print engine, so each page must be placed by hand. A 1.0-inch icon LCD shows basic status information through 27 segments. Inside, the printer carries 64 MB of fixed memory and a 980 MHz processor.

Black documents run at up to 12 ISO pages per minute. Colour printing is slower at up to 5 pages per minute, which makes the machine better suited to ordinary home documents than large colour jobs. Black output reaches 1200 x 1200 rendered dpi, and colour can rise to 4800 x 1200 optimized dpi. The flatbed scans A4 originals at up to 1200 dpi with 24-bit colour. Copies reach 600 x 600 dpi, with up to 99 copies in one run. Borderless printing is possible on supported sizes up to A4.

Paper loads into a 100-sheet input tray, but the output tray holds only 30 sheets. Longer jobs may therefore need the printed stack cleared before the input tray is empty. Plain sheets and photo paper use the same feed. It also takes envelopes, cards, and selected coated inkjet paper. Standard sizes range from A6 through A4, with B5 and Legal also accepted. DL envelopes fit as well. Custom sheets may measure from 88.9 x 127 mm to 215.9 x 355.6 mm. Automatic duplex hardware is not fitted, so both sides require manual page turning.

A wired setup uses the single Hi-Speed USB 2.0 device port. Built-in Wi-Fi is absent, which limits direct computer use to a nearby USB connection. With the trays closed, the body measures 434.66 x 361.53 x 157.26 mm and weighs about 5.03 kg. Opening the trays increases the depth to 580.65 mm and the height to 259.37 mm. The printer draws about 2.588 watts in the ready state. Sleep mode lowers that figure to 0.984 watts.
