The HP Smart Tank 5115 Driver lets the computer communicate with the printer for normal print jobs and scanner access. Scanning software can use the installed scanner component when an original is placed on the flatbed. Copies are made from the printer itself rather than sent from the computer. For a wireless setup, the computer and printer can communicate over the same network. A nearby computer can use USB instead when a direct wired connection is needed.

The HP Smart Tank 5115 is a colour thermal-inkjet all-in-one built around refillable ink tanks for black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. It prints, scans, and copies, but original documents must go on the flatbed one at a time because no automatic document feeder is fitted. The control panel carries smart buttons and a 1.2-inch icon LCD. Internal memory is 64 MB.

Black documents can reach 1200 x 1200 rendered dpi, and colour printing can rise to 4800 x 1200 optimized dpi. At ISO settings, the engine runs at up to 12 ppm in black and 5 ppm in colour. Draft A4 jobs move faster, reaching 22 ppm for black pages and 16 ppm for colour. The first black page takes about 14 seconds. Scanning from the glass reaches up to 1200 dpi.

Paper enters through a 100-sheet tray and finished sheets collect in a 30-sheet output tray, so larger jobs may need the output area cleared during printing. Standard sheets can be A4, B5, A6, or Legal, and the same feed also takes DL envelopes. Custom stock ranges from 88.9 x 127 mm to 215.9 x 355.6 mm. Borderless output is available up to 210 x 297 mm. Two-sided printing is manual, so the sheets have to be turned and reloaded for the second side.

A nearby computer can connect through Hi-Speed USB 2.0. For wireless printing, the machine uses 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and can also make a direct Wi-Fi connection without relying on the home router. Phones and tablets can send jobs with the HP app, Apple AirPrint, Mopria Print Service, or the HP Print Service Plugin. With the trays closed, the body is about 434.66 x 361.53 x 157.26 mm and weighs roughly 5.03 kg. HP rates the monthly duty cycle at up to 3,000 pages.
