HP Smart Tank 5109 Driver helps the computer communicate correctly with this all-in-one ink tank printer. Once the software is installed, Windows can send print jobs to the printer and receive scan data from the flatbed scanner. Copying runs from the printer hardware itself, but the driver package keeps the computer-side print and scan functions available. A USB connection links one nearby computer directly, while wireless setup lets the printer work through a Wi-Fi connection. With the connection in place, document output and scan requests move to the correct part of the machine.

The HP Smart Tank 5109 combines colour printing, scanning, and copying in a refillable ink-tank design. Printing comes from HP Thermal Inkjet technology using four ink bottles: one black, plus cyan, magenta, and yellow. A 33-segment 1.2-inch iCON LCD shows status information, and the printer has 64 MB of integrated memory. Scanning relies on a CIS flatbed rather than an automatic document feeder, so each original must be placed on the glass.

A nearby computer can use the Hi-Speed USB 2.0 connection. Wireless printing runs over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, and Wi-Fi Direct can create a direct wireless link without the local network. Phones and tablets can print through the HP app, Apple AirPrint, Mopria Print Service, or HP Print Service Plugin.
