A4 documents print at up to 40 pages per minute, and the first page can emerge in about 6.3 seconds. Resolution reaches 1200 x 1200 dpi when finer text and line detail are needed. Automatic duplex printing is built in, so ordinary two-sided documents do not need to be turned over by hand. The feed path also accommodates rough, light, or heavy paper, along with envelopes and labels in supported sizes such as A4 and A5.

A nearby computer connects through the rear Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port. The 4002d itself does not contain built-in wireless networking, so network-free wireless printing is not available from the printer hardware. With its trays and covers closed, the chassis measures 381 x 357 x 216 mm; opening the printer for normal operation can increase its depth to 634 mm. Weight is about 8.22 kg. HP records power consumption at roughly 495 watts during active printing under its stated test conditions.
