The HP LaserJet Enterprise 5501n Driver lets the computer identify the printer and pass each print job to it correctly. A nearby computer can use USB, while Ethernet places the machine on a wired office network. That network link lets several computers send documents to the same print queue. Once setup is complete, page layout and selected print settings travel with the job instead of being lost during communication.

The HP LaserJet Enterprise 5501n is a print-only monochrome laser printer with a 1.4 GHz dual-core processor. Print jobs draw on 2 GB of memory and 8 GB of eMMC storage inside the machine. Status messages and local settings appear on a 2.7-inch color graphics LCD. The print engine uses a single black toner cartridge.
Single-sided output runs at up to 50 pages per minute on A4 or 52 pages per minute on Letter paper. From ready mode, the first page takes about 4.1 seconds on A4 and roughly 4.0 seconds on Letter. Maximum print resolution reaches 1200 x 1200 dpi. Automatic duplexing is not fitted to the 5501n, so two-sided documents need the pages turned by hand.
Most paper loads into the 550-sheet main tray, with another 100 sheets fitting in the multipurpose feeder. That brings standard input capacity to 650 sheets, although the output bin holds only 250 printed pages. Plain, recycled, rough, and letterhead paper can use the feeds. Cardstock and labels are accepted too, along with transparencies and envelopes. Custom sheets placed in the multipurpose tray can measure from 76.2 x 127 mm up to 216 x 356 mm.
A nearby computer can use the Hi-Speed USB 2.0 device port, while Gigabit Ethernet places the printer on a wired network. The separate USB host port is intended for compatible storage and walk-up tasks. Wireless printing is not built into the base hardware; Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct require the optional HP Jetdirect 3200w accessory. AirPrint and Mopria can then serve compatible mobile devices. With its trays closed, the chassis measures 400 x 400 x 305 mm and weighs about 11.8 kg with toner installed.
