HP ENVY Inspire 7221 is a colour thermal inkjet all-in-one that prints, scans, and copies. Ink comes from one black cartridge and one tri-colour cartridge. The control panel carries a 2.65-inch capacitive colour touchscreen, backed by 256 MB of fixed DDR3 memory. Scanning relies on a CIS flatbed, so each original must be placed on the glass by hand. Fax hardware is not fitted.

Black documents reach up to 15 ISO ppm, and colour pages reach 10 ISO ppm. Draft mode is faster at up to 22 ppm in black and 20 ppm in colour. Automatic duplex printing turns the paper inside the machine for two-sided output. The flatbed records scans at up to 1200 x 1200 dpi. Copying runs at up to 13 cpm in black or 6 cpm in colour, with a 50-copy limit and scaling from 25 to 400 percent.

Paper loads into a 125-sheet main tray, with a separate 15-sheet tray reserved for photo stock. Printed pages collect in the 60-sheet output tray. The main tray takes common office sizes such as A4, A5, A6, and B5. Envelopes and supported photo sheets also fit. Borderless output reaches 216 x 297 mm, and automatic media sensing can adjust the print settings for recognised paper. Stacks of originals still require manual handling because no automatic document feeder is present.

A nearby computer can use the USB 2.0 client port. Wireless jobs travel over dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi. Phones, tablets, and Chromebooks can print through AirPrint, Mopria, Chrome OS printing, or the HP app. Ethernet, memory-card slots, and camera-direct PictBridge are not provided. With the trays closed, the body measures 460 x 383 x 191 mm. Depth extends to 511 mm during use, and the machine weighs about 6.91 kg.
