HP Smart Tank 678 Driver connects the computer with the printer during the initial setup. Once recognized, the all-in-one can receive print jobs and send scans back to the computer. It accepts one original at a time because no automatic document feeder is fitted. A two-line LCD and smart-guided buttons provide local control instead of a touchscreen.

Copies use 600 x 600 dpi, with resizing from 25% to 400%. Up to 99 copies can be produced in one run.

The input tray holds 150 sheets, but the output area has room for 100 printed pages. That difference may require attention during longer jobs. Automatic duplex printing turns ordinary document sheets inside the machine for two-sided output. Borderless printing reaches A4 or Letter size. Standard sheets range from A6 through Legal, depending on the selected paper setting. The same feed also takes envelopes, cards, recycled sheets, and photo paper, with weight limits changing by material.

A nearby computer can connect through the Hi-Speed USB 2.0 device port. Wireless jobs can use either the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz home network. Wi-Fi Direct creates a separate device-to-printer connection when a router is unavailable. Phones and tablets can send jobs using Apple AirPrint, Mopria, the HP app, or Android printing services. The rated monthly duty cycle is 3,000 A4 pages, although HP recommends a regular volume of 400 to 800 pages.
